Noëlle Cuppens
| Conceal, typify, sense and associate are processes that characterize Cuppens' work. From a broadranged study of a personal relation to existing elements issues a diversity of installations and autonomous works in public space or exhibition space.
Besides interventions in existing elements outdoors, such as trees that she dressed in specifically designed and produced clothing and trees that she wrapped in different materials in different clors, each corresponding to the character of the tree, Cuppens produces installations in galleries and exhibition spaces.
Site-specific work means to Cuppens an endlees tuning in to a site, reacting to visitors and remodelling suggestions and scketches. Her approach of work-in-progress results in work that stays, teasingly, inside the heads of the viewers.
Her work for shows can take on the form of photographs, sometimes reworked time after time as to result in a totally new image, but can just as easily consist of a series of furniture, perfectly wrapped in sofr, colorful felt. Her latest work is a series of 'drawing', embroidered with thread on several layers of white felt. Not only the 'drawing' on the top layer is visible, but also those underneath, whether really seen as an image or just sensed or presumed.
Characteristically these multilayered works ask for a close look. |
